Hi, I'm Riah! I am an adult with a disability. With my limitations and the skills that I have gained over time, I have learned that things work best for me when I embrace simple ways of doing things--but simple isn't always the same thing as easy. Sometimes it requires learning more advanced skills and gaining a deeper understanding of what I'm doing, and sometimes it takes a lot of time and work to learn. Because of how hard it has been to find the resources that I have needed in order to learn these skills, I wanted to share some of the things I have learned. Perhaps somebody else can benefit from what I have learned. :)
I am limited by the number of details that I have to remember or pay attention to when I'm doing things. I can't do tasks that require too many steps, unless I am able to break down a complex task into a manageable number of smaller tasks. I've learned a lot of strategies to achieve this; but I've also had to give up a lot of things that I wanted to be able to do. I decided that if I have to completely relearn how to do something every time I do it, as if I had never learned how to do it before, then it's time to reconsider whether I really want to or need to keep trying. Sometimes learning a simpler way, even if it requires more advanced understanding and skills, is just a better use of my time and mental energy.
To see some of my finished projects, you can visit my "Cheering Things" website and my "Snails and Things" blog. (Apparently I really connect with the word "things," which I didn't notice until after I had chosen the name for this blog.) Thanks for dropping by! :)
